Transparent Solar Panels: Collectors of Green Energy
AECH 20 informs that Michigan State University researchers’ team developed a fully transparent solar panels that can be placed over a window or any other clear surface. The transparent luminescent concentrator can harvest solar energy without affecting light transmittance. The captured light is transported to the contour of the panel, where it is converted to electricity with the help of thin strips of photovoltaic solar cells.
This development would take most part of buildings’ facades making them more efficient and aesthetic without changing the original design.
Previously similar attempts had been made, but results were never satisfying enough because of low efficiency and poor material quality.
Currently the team is working on improving the energy-producing efficiency, that is of 1 % at the moment, and the aim is to reach one beyond 5%.
