NBC News informs that experts are already anticipating that July will be the hottest month on record. According to the scientists, it is a sign that the planet’s global climate is warming, and that human activities are causing extreme events such as heat waves to become more likely and more intense.
Michael Mann, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University, tweeted on July 15 about the warmest month of the year mentioning that if this July turns out to be the warmest July, it will be the warmest month there has been measured on Earth.
Jack Williams, director of the Center for Climatic Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison said the heat waves of our days are going to be the normal events of tomorrow.
Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels or emitting carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere. Increasing greenhouse gas emissions is associated with warmer global surface temperatures.
Scientists say global temperatures could increase unless significant measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions are adopted. If not, the heat will create conditions on Earth that have not been seen in more than 2 million years.
