News.am informs that the World Environment Day was celebrated on June 5 in the Botanical Garden of Yerevan. In connection with this event, Armenia’s Nature Protection Ministry and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed an agreement with respect to a project on sustainable management of Armenia’s forests and pastures.
In the frameworks of the project, it is planned to make a new forest zone with sixty and more hectares, to reconstruct and reequip the seed plot of Martuni, which, in its turn, will become a serious base for further forestry activities in the region.
Nature Protection Minister Aram Harutyunyan noted that Lake Sevan Basin—specifically, the Vardenis region—is selected as the area for the implementation of this project. In his words, this project will assist in the reduction of the adverse effects which climate change has on the mountain ecosystems of Armenia. This will make it possible to provide diversity and ecosystem integrity alongside with the local’s agricultural activities.
