Green America informs that appliances used to keep cool leak gases that warm the atmosphere at an extreme rate. Refrigerators and air conditioning units contain substances called refrigerants which keep things cool are melting the ice caps.
Unfortunately, the most common refrigerants are greenhouse gases
called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are intensifying the climate
crisis.
Addressing the shorter-lived,
extremely potent HFC emissions is a huge part of the fight against CO2
emissions. It\’s estimated that eliminating HFCs can cut nearly 90 gigatons of emissions that
are causing the climate crisis.
Improving refrigerant practices is a step to cut dangerous greenhouse gases.
