Urban natural areas support biodiversity, environmental quality and opportunities for recreation. On October 14, 2026, Armenia’s Ministry of Environment reported that Yerevan’s Council had endorsed a draft decision to establish the Hrazdan Gorge as a locally significant protected natural area.
According to the ministry, the proposed designation would help protect the gorge’s geological, natural and cultural heritage, along with plants and animals, including species listed in Armenia’s Red Book.
Why implementation matters
Endorsement of a draft decision is an important step, but it should not be confused with confirmation that all legal and management measures are already in force. Effective protection will depend on implementation, ecological monitoring, public participation and responsible use.
Local businesses can support environmental education, responsible tourism and community-based conservation initiatives.
The next test is whether the initiative delivers measurable improvements for nature and the city.
